Leonid Katukhin, the General Director of AeroFilter LLC, was recently awarded the prestigious second-highest prize in Russia. On December 17, he received the award at the Government House. "Of course, this is an award for the entire team," says Leonid Fedorovich. The award decree states that AeroFilter's development was created "in the interests of the state's strategic security."
BACK TO THE SEA
The company's name suggests that it specializes in filters. However, these filters are not ordinary; they are designed for nuclear power plant reactors. The government award was given for a new innovative development: a filtration system for the reactors of nuclear icebreakers. These ships operate in extreme Arctic conditions, and the reactors face challenges such as rocking, vibration, and constantly changing conditions. As a result, the filtration systems must meet specific requirements. The new system incorporates innovative technologies for bonding sorbents that capture radionuclides with non-woven materials. As a result, the filtration system achieves a remarkable 99.97% efficiency in purifying emissions.
New huge icebreakers, twice as large as the current ones, are currently being built for year-round navigation along the Northern Sea Route. Instead of two reactors, they will have four. They will be equipped with Obninsk filtration systems. Captain 1st Rank Leonid Katukhin has been serving on nuclear submarines for 30 years. Now, he has returned to the sea.
FILTERS FOR NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS
At the reactor of any nuclear power plant, 26 types of different filters are working simultaneously. AeroFilter produces a full range of them. 23 of them are based on its own patents! Supplies are made not only to Russian nuclear power plants, but also abroad — to Belarus, Turkey, and Bangladesh.
The responsibility is incredible. “Everything is done under the supervision of authorized organizations,” comments Leonid Katukhin. “From the procurement of materials to manufacturing and shipment.”
One of the achievements of the past year is that AeroFilter has accredited its own laboratory. It conducts certification tests for all types of filters. "Our measurements are the ultimate truth," explains Leonid Fedorovich. "All filters must meet the standard, as it directly affects people's safety. There are only two such laboratories in Russia. Our laboratory is the most modern, equipped with the latest measuring equipment."
The future holds good prospects. "I would like to congratulate everyone on the upcoming New Year," says Leonid Katukhin. — I wish you good spirits, successful plans, and, most importantly, good health in the face of the ongoing pandemic!”
